Tommy Glisson, and his first first partner, his mother, Velma Halsted started our first endeavor, the Glisson Mobile Home Park, with a commitment to friendly, personal service and an ethic for doing things right the first time. As times change, so do the needs of the community. With the city of Carbondale growing and the needs of the faculty, staff and students of Southern Illinois University changing, it was time for G & R Rentals to make a change as well. August 2001 marked the opening of our first two in a series of many apartment buildings. Again, Tommy Glisson, put in several hours of research and planning before breaking ground on these beautiful BRAND NEW apartments. When we set our mind to do something, we always try to do things the only way we know how; striving for the best.
Carbondale apartments from G & R Rentals
One of the things we found in doing research was that most apartments don't have washer/dryer hookups. With this in mind we included Brand New Washers and Dryers in the apartments along with energy efficient dishwashers. By having your own washer & dryer you can save an average of $80 per month over going to the laundromat. Plus, the convenience is unmeasurable. We also noted that heating and cooling costs were a concern among the renters that we talked to. Each one of our units has a high efficiency heat pump and air conditioner, as well as ceiling fans to aid in air circulation. Ceramic tile, plush carpeting, huge walk-in closets and private decks are all features that renters wished they had, so that's all included in the new apartments. To give our tenants a technology advantage, all apartments are equipped with instant DSL networking as well as digital cable availability. Surf in the comfort of our beautiful, new, apartments!
2300 South Illinois Apartments We currently have 1 and 2 bedroom apartments at 2300 South Illinois Avenue. Each of these units contains all of the amenities mentioned above and have one large bath. They are located approximately 1 mile south of the S.I.U. Arena. The location is very quiet and the private patios look out onto a wooded lot, giving the tenant a feeling of living out in the country. While seclusion is the feeling, the apartments have a S.I.U. bus stop at the front of the complex. They are also within 2 blocks of one of the best meat markets and grocery stores in Southern Illinois.

Grand Avenue Apartments
In a response to overwhelming demand, in November of 2001 construction was started on 1 bedroom apartments as well as 2 bedroom townhouses on Grand Avenue. We currently have 12 one-bedroom units and 10 two-bedroom units here, they have either 1, 1 & 1/2, or 2 1/2 baths. These units are adjacent to a small shopping mall containing a Subway Sandwich shop, a hair salon, a laundromat, a Bar-B-Q restaurant, a tanning salon, Chinese restaurant, Copies & More and our rental office. These apartments are approximately one block from S.I.U. Bookstore and the Recreation Center. With being brand new apartments as well as the nicest apartments Carbondale has to offer, they rent fast. Park Street Development
We are always busy building quality apartments. Our Grand Street Apartments were finished August of 2002, and we moved immediately to Park Street, to build a new development with 90 brand new apartments for the community. It was finished in 2006. The saying goes, "You are so often remembered not for what your community does for you, but for what you do for your community." Well, we just hope people remember us as the landlord who built a lot of great apartments and made life better for folks in Carbondale.
As of August 2003 five buildings containing 32 one-bedroom apartments and eight two-bedroom flats were completed. By August 2004 another six buildings were completed. This added 14 two-bed, 2.5 bath townhouses, 12 one-bedroom apartments and eight two-bedroom flats. In May and August of 2005, the final two buildings of the project were completed. This added the final 16 one-bedroom apartments that were needed. Since completion, the Park Street location now has 60 one-bedroom apartments, 16 two-bedroom apartments and 14 two-bedroom, 2.5 bath townhouses. Where will we go next? Who knows?
All apartments in the Park Street Development have full-size washers and dryers, energy efficient stoves, refrigerators and dishwashers. Our walk-in closets are huge and each unit has a private patio with sliding glass doors off of each bedroom. To keep up with ever changing technology, Park Street units are powered for DSL networking, making the internet an instant pleasure.
